Kearney, Nebraska-based The Buckle Inc. ended May with sales down across its men’s and women’s businesses.

The retailer said Thursday it generated net sales for the four weeks ended May 27 of $89.3 million, which is down 5.3% from the year-ago period.

The Buckle sells RVCA, Billabong, Salt Life, Brixton, Hurley, Oakley, Costa, and other industry brands.

Same-store sales for the same May timeframe were off 6.4% from a year earlier.

The Buckle, which counts 440 stores, said men’s was off about 4.5%, while women’s fell about 8%.

Price points in men’s and women’s were up about 4% for the four-week May period.

Both accessories and footwear slipped for the four-week period by 3% and 13.5%, respectively.

Meanwhile, The Buckle said units per transaction declined 1%, while noting a “slight” increase in average transaction value.

The Buckle last week reported results for its fiscal first quarter ended April 29, with net sales down 8.5% to $282.8 million. Net income narrowed to $42.9 million, compared to $55.3 million a year ago.

Despite the challenging spring, The Buckle continues to refresh or open new doors. The retailer said last week it expects seven more openings and 13 remodels this year as it eyes opportunities in power centers and outlet locations.
