We followed up with SIA President Nick Sargent to find out more about the trade organization’s plan to move from McLean, Virginia to an undisclosed mountain city in the West.
SIA will reveal the actual location next week.
We were interested to hear what it means for the organization, especially the employees.
Curious what will happen to the SIA staff, many of whom have worked there for a long time? Will the staff size be shrinking?
SIA President Nick Sargent: A small portion of the staff will be relocating with SIA. We hold a very deep gratitude for the commitment and dedication that our current staff has given the organization and the industry as a whole and are thrilled that some of our staff will be staying onboard with SIA through the relocation.
We have no intention to shrink our staff size, and the search to fill all available positions will commence immediately upon the announcement of our new location.
Why move now?
Nick Sargent: The conversation surrounding a relocation for SIA has been a multi-year process that began prior to me coming onboard earlier this year.
The move is one of many steps that SIA is taking to initiate change and make decisions that have a positive impact. Ultimately, it makes the most sense for SIA to be in closer proximity to the snow sports community.
Lastly, how is the challenging last winter, and challenged retail sector, impacting SIA’s budget and plans?
Nick Sargent: By nature, the snow sports industry has its ups and downs. While the winter challenged the East Coast, we saw significant growth in sales and participation numbers in the West.
However, the inconsistent season did not have an impact on our relocation budget or plans. We continue to stand by our members in the ever-changing landscape as a stable and valuable resource.
More change is on its way, all with an intention to strengthen and support our members and the snow sports industry.
