Large industry customer Macy’s is set to test a new off-price business in New York that it may expand in the future.
The industry already does a lot of business with other off-price retailers including Nordstrom Rack and T.J. Maxx.
Macy’s new concept, called Macy’s Backstage, will start with four stores averaging about 30,000 square feet, the company said Tuesday.
The stores will sell women’s, men’s and kids’ apparel, shoes, accessories, housewares, intimates and jewelry. The inventory will be a mix of clearance merchandise from full-price Macy’s stores and special discount buys from brands.
The prices at Macy’s Backstage will be in the range of 20% to 80% lower than similar merchandise found elsewhere.
The stores will accept Macy’s charge cards but not coupons, which are a major part of Macy’s regular business.
The Macy’s Backstage stores will open in Fall 2015.
Currently, Macy’s operates 885 stores in 45 states.
