Press Release:
THE VANS PRO AND VANS PRO JUNIOR WERE GRACED WITH A FUN WIND SWELL AND A SENSATIONAL FINAL DAY
The 52nd Annual Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championships Presented By Vans is a Wrap
It was a thrilling final day in Virginia Beach at the 2014 Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championships (CE-ECSC) presented by Vans. After a week of 1-3’ surf, the wind swell increased overnight Saturday and into the final day on Sunday bringing fun, and challenging 3-4’+ wind peaks to the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Vans Pro and Vans Pro Junior competition.
The energy was high and the fans were out in force as the Vans Pro field of competitors narrowed down to the final four on Sunday. In the end it was Virginia Beach local, Michael Dunphy who came out on top making history and capturing the first hometown win for the city since 1981. For the Juniors, it was Hawaii’s Kaito Kino who scored a solid 16.67 two-wave total in the Final, scoring a 9.50 on a big right-hander where he blasted three powerful turns out the back.
Congratulations to Vans Pro and Pro Junior winners Michael Dunphy and Kaito Kino on their first-ever ASP event wins and to all of the competitors who came near and far to uphold 52-years of surfing tradition in the great city of Virginia Beach.

All good things must come to an end, and this year’s CE-ECSC presented by Vans is a wrap. It was an action packed week full of activities and entertainment. The Coastal Edge Vendor Village was a buzz all week-long with action sports industry brands coming together to celebrate the biggest action sports event on the East Coast with giveaways and games for all. Skate and BMX demos on the vert ramp took center stage throughout the week with top riders giving fans a show. Vans skate legend Christian Hosoi made a first-time appearance at CE-ECSC along with event loyalists Omar Hassan, Josh Borden and Alex Perelson. Live music performances took place daily on the music stage with a special performance on the last night by the Plain White T’s. The show attracted thousands of fans who gathered on the sand to soak in the warm Virginia Beach night and witness a spectacular performance.
Vans BMX team rider Daniel Sandoval took top honors at the 2014 Vans Off the Wall BMX Invitational bringing home the win after a second place finish in the event last year. Top BMX riders battled it out on the park course over the two-day contest. With an expanded course and a $25,000 prize purse on the line, the competition was fierce. Ultimately, it was Sandoval’s fellow Vans team riders who took the second and third podium positions, Scotty Cranmer placing second and Gary Young third.
Thank you to the extended Vans family at Coastal Edge, the ASP, the Jaycees, the city of Virginia Beach, all of the event supporters and fans. Virginia Beach isn’t just for lovers, it’s for family. Until next year friends.
