The Surfrider Foundation and Teva are excited to announce the return of “Rise Above Plastics Month” in October.  The goal of the month is to educate people on the threats single-use plastics pose to our marine environments, and challenge them to reduce their plastic footprint by making simple changes in their daily lives.

“Plastic is the most common type of marine litter worldwide, comprising up to 90 percent of floating marine debris,” says Laura Lee, Surfrider Foundation’s Director of Marketing and Communications.  “During Rise Above Plastics month, the public can participate in various activities including our ‘One Foot At A Time’ cleanup and art contest and our ‘Rise Above Plastics Month’ membership drive.  Together, we can help protect what we love: our oceans, waves and beaches.”

As part of “Rise Above Plastics Month,” the Surfrider Foundation and Teva will host the 3rd Annual “One Foot At A Time” plastic cleanup and art contest.  This unique contest challenges participants to collect one square foot of trash from their beach or community, and then use that material to create a unique mosaic sculpture using one of the six downloadable templates on the “Rise Above Plastics Month” website.  Surfrider Foundation will judge the photos of the submissions and the top picks will win a host of cool gear from Teva, Firewire Surfboards and the Surfrider Foundation.

Surfrider Foundation will also offer a “Rise Above Plastics Month” membership special so that those who join, renew or donate can ”Green Your Halloween.”  From October 1 – 15, those who join or renew their Surfrider Foundation membership or make a donation for $35 will receive two Halloween-themed reusable ChicoBags.  These are the compact reusable bags that started it all for ChicoBag.  They are easy to remember, and the Original design makes it easy to stow by featuring an integrated pouch that allows the entire bag to fit easily into one’s pocket.  These “frightfully” exciting reusable bags feature a fun Halloween-image on one side and the Surfrider Foundation logo on the other, and can be used for Trick-or-Treating, grocery shopping or picking up trash at a “One Foot At A Time” cleanup.
