That legacy made the next step especially meaningful: rather than deliver another seasonal update, Hurley set out to rethink what its pinnacle performance boardshort could be.
The Phantom Max development process began with a close look at the limitations and opportunities within traditional boardshort construction. The team focused on the details that can shape a surfer’s experience in and around the water, including mobility, comfort, waistband security, reduced friction, drying time, and the environmental impact of the materials themselves. The goal was not to improve one isolated feature. It was to create a more complete performance system. By examining those priorities together, the team could rethink how the boardshort should perform from the first paddle through the end of a session.
That approach led to a fabric designed to balance speed, comfort, and freedom of movement. Phantom Max incorporates recycled oyster shells and seaweed fibers, connecting its material story directly to the water where the product is intended to perform. Proprietary Hydromax yarns are engineered to shed water quickly and increase airflow, helping the fabric dry up to two times faster than conventional boardshorts. An ultralight nylon blend and four-way stretch support unrestricted movement while maintaining the durability required for repeated use.
Just as important, Phantom Max was developed alongside Hurley’s athletes. Their experience helped inform how the product should feel and function in real surf conditions. That athlete-led perspective kept the development process centered on practical performance rather than technology for technology’s sake.
The result is a new expression of the Phantom platform: light, fast-drying, comfortable, and designed for movement. Phantom Max represents the beginning of Phantom’s next generation and a renewed standard for Hurley’s performance products in and around the water.
