There’s a new brand, equally devoted to both design and substance, which introduces you to some of our favorite design creators and mavericks. The first-of-its-kind design community platform will kick off featuring design giants like ICON 4X4, Modernica and Moore and Giles where we share their story and explore their process.
Autotype offers a divergent course for the design community, one that promotes collaboration and collective opportunity for success, with little compromise.
“We search high and low to identify true designers who are pushing boundaries in our field and pursuing new frontiers for design to flourish; we tell their stories, explore their processes and offer their products online. —Derek Galkin
The site will provide a unique platform for designers to not only share their work but to also use the site as a revenue stream, with 10% of sales feeding into the Autotype Scholarship Fund, offering scholarships for promising future designers.
“Beyond feeling and doing good, giving back to the future of design helps us open doors, connect, and build a better design community.—Tu Pham
About Autotype
Imagination propels us forward. It envisions profound futures. It captivates, compels, and at times, it even terrifies us. This is the playground of artists, innovators, and creatives. Designers bring this imagination to life: they relentlessly provoke, plan, and perfect in order to craft something functional and timeless. They influence what we wear, what we drive, and how we live, font by font, product by product, and detail by painstaking detail.
At Autotype, we share in this pursuit. Our aim is to create an inclusive space for designers to entertain the impossible, with support from a community of advocates who value great design.
About the Founders
Autotype is the brainchild of two Santa Barbarans, entrepreneurs Derek Galkin and Tu Pham. Galkin brings over 20 years of brand experience: whether building brands from scratch, reviving distressed brands or recognizing growth opportunities in underperforming brands, Galkin has repeatedly improved market positioning through his brand vision and product-creation ability. In addition to Autotype, Galkin is co-founder of SeaVees, a California-based footwear brand, where he created a successful key platform that included a strategic investment from the Deckers Outdoor Corporation (DECK) as well as entry into the stores of such coveted retailers as Jeffrey NY, Fred Segal, Bergdorf Goodman, Barney’s and J. Crew. Galkin was successful in selling SeaVees to footwear conglomerate Pentland in March 2016. Previous to his success at SeaVees, Galkin gained experience aligning with such global brands as Sperry Top-Sider and Oakley.
Pham’s background in art direction and creative development for brands—from industry giants like Johnson & Johnson and Adobe to aesthetic experts like Pantone and Autotype—puts her at the forefront of the Autotype aesthetic, one that is design-oriented, simple, and classic, to reflect the a unique and singular vision and voice.
