Hawaii economic report, Day I: How Hawaii is faring

For my first story for our new Executive Edition, I decided to research how Hawaii is holding up during the downturn because it is such an important territory for the action sports industry. I examined tourism and other economic data, talked with the state's chief economist, and touched base with several key retail accounts.

Economy

Hawaiian officials are forecasting modest growth in the state's economy for 2008 and 2009. Hawaii's GDP is projected to grow 1.9 percent in 2008 and 2 percent in 2009. By comparison, GDP grew 3 percent in 2007.
