The up and downsides to manufacturers opening retail stores

Some manufacturers have been increasingly pushing into retail over the past few years as companies look to showcase and market their brands and give consumers another opportunity to buy their goods.

While there are many benefits to manufacturers having their own stores, we are starting to see some of the downsides emerge because of soft consumer spending.

Both Billabong and Quiksilver said recently that retail store performance and costs are negatively impacting results.
