The spending freefall that started in the fall and accelerated through the holidays has me wondering: Are we in the midst of a cyclical downturn, with short-term declines followed by a rebound to more normal spending? Or have we just witnessed the opening of a new era, when people just spend less?

I put these questions to core retailers, brand leaders and industry observers.
