U.S. consumers still searching for a bottom

U.S. consumers are sending mixed signals about whether the economic downturn is bottoming.

March retail sales results released today show an end to the promising run of month-over-month growth in comps, and a steep decline compared to March 2008.

With those results and the mixed comps from industry retailers we reported last week, I decided to check the latest readings on two economic indicators to see if they provide any clarity.

But first, those U.S. retail results.
