Talking shop with The Closet owner Billy Stade

I ate lunch the other day at Eat Chow with Billy Stade, the owner of The Closet. The restaurant is attached to The Closet store and complex in Costa Mesa, Calif., which attracts a fashionable crowd and really reflects his vision of the "California Couture" lifestyle.

Billy and I talked about many things, including the "excruciating" life of an independent retailer, his grand vision for The Closet, expanding and moving spaces at Fashion Island in Newport Beach, aligning with key vendors and carrying fewer new brands, and how he is changing his buys in the recession.
