I heard some rumors about Becker Surfboards possibly closing some stores, so I checked in with Dave Hollander to find out the facts.
Dave explained the situation to me via email:
“Hey, I just wanted to set the record straight about all the rumors flying around about us folding. Last March, I started negotiating with our Huntington landlord, Shea Homes, about my June right to renew lease option. They wanted to raise it, and I thought it should be much lower. We did not come to terms, so I did not renew my option. They have made several concessions, but none of them involved money (just length of lease).
“So last week, given the current environment and the fact that Huntington is our least performing door, I decided to close that store. Our lease is up March 31st.
“We are cutting back some spring orders because we are absorbing that store’s inventories.
“No other (Becker) store closings have even been talked about. In fact, there might be some very good beach locations coming to market soon that may now be affordable and attractive to us.”
After HB closes, Becker will have a total of five stores: Hermosa Beach, Malibu, Mission Viejo, Corona del Mar and Encinitas.
