SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. – (Aug. 11, 2010) – To accommodate the growing sport of standup paddling, ASR and SUP magazine – the leading publication in the standup media world – have teamed up for a Standup Demo Sunday, August 15 at Coronado Tidelands Park from 7 to 11 a.m. in San Diego during the ASR Tradeshow. Representatives from some of the most influential manufacturers in the industry will be on hand to show their wares and walk novices and experts alike through their equipment. The ASR/SUP magazine Demo is open to the public.

“Thanks to standup paddling, surfing is no longer confined to coastal locales,” says Joe Carberry, Managing Editor, SUP magazine. “The surf lifestyle has gone inland and standup paddling is at the center of this awakening.”

Starting at 7 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 15, shuttles will leave from the San Diego Convention Center every 30 minutes, providing transportation to Coronado Tidelands Park. The largest San Diego Bay park, Tidelands Park offers a beach, picnic areas and plenty of open space for the Standup Demo. The park is located directly across the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge from Harbor Boulevard and the San Diego Convention Center.

Over the past two years, retailers – both surf and kayak – have been reinvigorated by the sport of standup paddling. Ocean surf, lakes, flatwater rivers and even whitewater have become hallowed ground as the waterman ethos has spread.

“We’re excited about the expansion of the market,” says Hobie Marketing Director Sean Douglas. “It’s not just a surfer’s thing anymore. Families are getting involved and the sport is growing as it diversifies. People are pushing the envelope with where they can go and what they can do with standup boards.”
