Zumiez beats many mall competitors in December

Publicly-traded retailers released sales results for December this morning and Wednesday afternoon.

 

Here are some highlights from industry customers and competitors. PacSun no longer reports monthly sales results.

 

Zumiez

December same store sales: up 9.2% vs. a 0.3% increase in December 2009.

 

Comps by week:

 

1. up 17.7%

2. up 3.8%

 

3. up 3%

 

4. up 1.1%

 

5. up 35.5%

 

The number of transactions increased while the dollar per transaction decreased.

 

Regions: South up 10%, Midwest up 5%, Northeast up 4%, West up 3%

 

Positive categories: accessories, footwear, men’s, hardgoods, junior’s

 

Negative category: boys

 

Quarter-to-date comps: up 12.5%

 

Year-to-date comps: up 11.7%

 

Number of total stores: 400

 

Urban Outfitters

November and December

 

Total retail comps (including direct business): up 5%

 

Net store comps: flat

 

Total retail comps by chain (including direct): Urban up 6%, Anthropologie up 3%, Free People up 30%.

 

The Buckle

December comps: up 6.1%

 

Macy’s

December comps: up 3.9%

 

November/December combined: up 4.6%

 

Nordstrom

December comps: up 8.4%

 

Abercrombie & Fitch

Total December comps: up 15%

 

Hollister comps: up 17%

 

Aeropostale

December comps: down 5%

 

Gap

Total December comps: down 3%

 

Hot Topic

Total December comps: down 1.7%
