Press Release:

San Clemente, CA (June 25, 2011) – Surfrider Foundation activists Saturday joined tens of thousands of people across the country and around the world in protesting the expansion of offshore drilling. As part of the international Hands Across the Sand movement, citizens joined hands at hundreds of local events to express opposition to offshore drilling and support for clean energy.

Protesting offshore drilling.Surfrider Foundation chapters participated in over 25 events held at beaches and parks throughout the United States. The Surfrider Foundation has supported the Hands Across The Sand effort since its founding in 2009 by Florida surfer and restaurant owner Dave Rauschkolb.

“Our elected leaders need to understand that new offshore drilling is not the answer to our energy needs,” said Pete Stauffer, Surfrider Foundation’s Ocean Ecosystem Manager.

“The massive turnout for the Hands Across the Sands today shows that people oppose the risky practice of offshore drilling and understand that we need to seek real solutions to our energy crisis including increased efficiency, conservation and renewable alternatives.”
