GoPro Set For Winner of Big Shorts From Little Groms
Film Contest At California Surf Festival October 13th-16th
Oceanside, California (October, 12, 2011) – This year the winner of the Big Shorts from Little Grom Contest at the California Surf Festival will win a GoPro camera. GoPro is the world’s leading activity image capturing camera and, since coming on the scene, has opened up the possibilities for budding filmmakers to create a new era of action sports filmmaking.
Kids 18 years and under who enter the Big Shorts from Little Groms contest are able to make a film on any subject within the action sports genre. Film must be 5 minutes or under in length. The finalists are screened in a special program of the Festival Sunday and are judged by a group of action sports filmmakers.
This year, for the very first time, the big winner will take home a GoPro camera to assist them in making even more inspiring films for the future. In the past, some of the winners have gone on to land promising and inspiring jobs for some of the biggest names in the action sports industry. The festival kicks off Thursday evening with the screening of Mighty Uke by Tony Coleman followed by a musical presentation by Pat Enos and legendary ukulele wizard Bill Tapia (103 and still going strong!).
Other feature films screening over the four day festival will include: First Love by Claire Gorman (West Coast Premiere), Oceanides by Lorène Carpentier (USA Premiere), The Physics Of Surfing by Passmore Lab, Ocean Monk by Sanjay Rawal, Chasing the Swell by Sachi Cunningham, Splinters by Adam Pesce and Perrin Chiles, Get-N Classic by Vans, Sion Milosky by Volcom, Blow Up by Victor Pakpour (CSM’s first BSFLG winner!), Surprise Excitement Party by Chris Coté, Lost & Found by Douglas Walker (San Diego Premiere), and The Still Point by Taki Bibelas.
Exciting short films will also be shown with the features and include: Eddie by Claire Gorman, Leave A Message by Jason Kenworthy and Aaron Leiber, Plastic Tide by Skye Kelly, On Board by Dustin Brockman, Hi, I’m Andy Irons by Michael Oblowitz, 36 Hours in the City by Billabong, Beer Can Surfboard by Rich Morrison, Sanded by Tim Ryan, The Board Meeting by Maggie Franks, and Blue Sway by Jack McCoy.
Plus a lifetime achievement honor, the “Silver Surfer Award” will be given to a surfer who has made significant contributions to the culture and lifestyle of the surfing community. Presented annually, past recipients have been Gary Linden and Linda Benson. This year’s award will go to San Diego’s own Skip Frye.
The 4th Annual California Surf Festival is a four-day fund raising festival filled with events full of music, movies, surf culture, and awards produced by and benefiting the California Surf Museum. This year, the festival will be held at the Sunshine Brooks Theatre (217 North Coast Highway, walking distance from the California Surf Museum, 312 Pier View Way). This year’s festival includes a vast and wonderful variety of entertainment, VIP receptions and guest appearances by many of surfing’s legends, both local and international.
Tickets are available online at www.californiasurffestival.com. General screenings are $10 and $8 for members of the Museum. The All Access Pass is $90 and $75 for members of the Museum. Mighty Uke with Bill Tapia and Pat Enos is $15 and $12 for members of the Museum. A VIP reception for the film The Still Point is Saturday; tickets are $35 and $25 for members of the Museum.
