Legendary San Diego Design Collective Launches Modern, Eco-Friendly Furniture Line at Sacred Craft Expo in Del Mar
Elegant, hand-shaped products are enabled by high-performance,
bio-based composites developed in Southern California.
October 3, 2011 San Diego, CA: Nomad Mobili, a new green furniture company inspired by California mid-century design, features pieces by legendary surfboard shapers Carl Ekstrom, Tim Bessell and Ned McMahon.
Ekstrom is being honored at the Sacred Craft Expo for his revolutionary asymmetrical surfboard designs (www.sacredcraftexpo.com). His “Ekstro” chair and the entire Nomad Mobili line will debut at the Expo at the Del Mar Fairgrounds October 9-10. Ekstrom is currently featured in the Mingei International Museum for his collaboration with San Diego industrial designer Toza Radakovich.
Nomad Mobili was founded by David Saltman, a 20-year pioneer of environmental technologies. His work history has included the formation of the first bio-composites’ company in North America and a solar company producing photovoltaic roofing tiles and architectural glass. Saltman was also executive director of Surfrider Foundation. His grandfather created Brown Saltman Furniture Company which produced designs by luminaries John Keal, Paul Frankl, Paul Laszlo and others.
According to Saltman, “Shapers are keenly aware of the relationship between beautiful lines and technical performance. Lightness, strength, transition, flow…these equations are hardwired into their hands as they shape blocks of foam into high-performance surfboards. Collectively, a century of experience informs the shapes and finishes of Nomad Mobili furniture.”
The furniture is made from soy-based polyurethane foam manufactured by Malama Composites. Each piece is surfaced with natural fiber cloth and bio-based epoxy resin produced by Entropy. Audi A8 water-based automotive paint was used to achieve the high-performance satin finishes. “These materials are durable, non-toxic and made from sustainable resources right here in America,” added Saltman. “We believe in near-sourcing, not outsourcing.”
