Surfrider Foundation Hosts Official Rip Curl Pro Search Kick Off Party November 1st At Mezzanine

Ty Segall and Kut U Up Perform To Raise Awareness About The Save Sloat Campaign

San Clemente, CA (October 11, 2011) – In anticipation of the World Tour coming to San Francisco, the Surfrider Foundation announced today that it will host the official Rip Curl Pro Search Kick Off Party at Mezzanine November 1st with lo-fi garage rocker Ty Segall and the recently reunited Kut U Up featuring Transworld SURF Editor-in-Chief Chris Cote.

Since 2005, Rip Curl has surprised surfers and fans alike with The Search – an event that changes location each year and brings surfing to parts of the world that have never played host to a WCT contest. This year’s stop at Ocean Beach will be the first surfing competition held in San Francisco in over a decade. From November 1-12 the best surfers in the world will compete at a break notorious for strong currents, fierce waves and frigid water.

The Surfrider Foundation’s event at Mezzanine not only welcomes the surfers to San Francisco, but it also serves as an opportunity for residents to learn moreabout the San Francisco Chapter and Save Sloat Campaign. Ocean Beach is experiencing long-term erosion and the area at Sloat Blvd. is a particular hotspot.

Earlier this year the bluff failed and caused the road to be reduced down to one lane. The San Francisco Chapter is working to minimize the impacts on the short-term response to this erosion and to advocate for a long-term response that incorporates managed retreat strategies to preserve the beach.

San Diego-based Kut U Up will jump-start the evening playing fan favorites “Have’s, Have Nots,” “S&M Dens” and “Destination”. Featuring Transworld SURF Editor-in-Chief Chris Cote, the band recently reunited in July and has been gearing up to record the follow up to “Pulled Over…Your Eyes Are Telling Me Different Son”, writing new songs with new concepts, themes and ideas.

Ty Segall headlines the Surfrider Foundation’s Kick Off Party following a month-long U.S. tour in support of his fifth full-length release “Goodbye Bread”, an album described by The Tune as “unadulterated joy.”

The calmer follow up to the critically-acclaimed 2010 release “Melted,” “Goodbye Bread” is a collection of songs featuring Ty’s signature bluesy melodies, and reverbs reminiscent of ’60s guitar tones, but also shows his “restraint and dynamic,” according to Allmusic.com’s review, which “allows the details to show through with greater clarity (especially in the harmonies).”

Admission to the Official Rip Curl Pro Search Kick Off Party hosted by the Surfrider Foundation is $20, and open to the general public, ages 21+.
