Zumiez Q1 comps better than expected

Important industry customer Zumiez continues to outperform teen competitors and posted same store sales in the first quarter that beat the company's guidance.

Zumiez beat its same store sales forecast in the first quarter and continues to put up strong numbers even against tough comparisons.

 

The company said Wednesday afternoon that Q1 same store sales rose 12.9%. On its last earnings call, Zumiez had predicted Q1 same store sales would rise in the high single digits.

 

In April, Zumiez comps increased 10.1%. In April last year, same store sales rose 17.5%.

 

This April, strong categories included men’s, footwear, junior’s, and hardgoods.

 

Accessories and boys recorded negative comps.

 

Comps by week in April were:

 

1. +33.2%

2. +4.9%

3. -11.6%

4. +18.7%

 

For March and April combined, same store sales rose 12.3%.

 

Zumiez currently operates 455 stores.
