ROXY Waikiki Classic To Be Held At Queens Beach, Waikiki HI on June 16-17
All-Ages Female Surf Festival With Amateur Contest and ASP Professional Contest
June 4, 2012 – Huntington Beach, CA: Action sports and fashion apparel brand ROXY is excited to announce that the ROXY Wakiki Classic, an evolution of the ROXY Wahine Classic, will be held in Waikiki, HI on June 16-17, 2012.
The ROXY Waikiki Classic is the only all-female amateur surf festival in the United States with the intention of encouraging girls of all ages (6+ years) and skill levels to get into the water, compete and experience the surf lifestyle.
This contest demonstrates ROXY’s support and determination to progress the sport of women’s surfing and now officially includes a 1-star stop on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) tour for women’s longboarding.
The event is free and open to the public. Twenty-four females in each category will compete in a two-day surf contest in longboarding and shortboarding. The festival will have six divisions with 1st – 4th place prizes: Teenie Wahine (ages 6-10), Wahines (ages 11-14), Jr. Queens (ages 15-19), Queens (ages 20-29), and Royalty (ages 30+).
“I’m really excited about the ROXY event in Waikiki,” said ROXY professional surfer and Hawaiian sweetheart Kelia Moniz (aka “Sister”).
“Growing up on this beach, I would wait all year long for summertime surf contests. I only dreamed of having a ROXY event at Queens. Now that we have one going every year, it makes me so happy! I love seeing all the new up and coming faces of women surfing.”
With the ROXY Waikiki Classic now on the ASP Tour, ROXY professional surfers including Kelia Moniz, Chloe Calmon, Vanina Walsh, and Jen Smith will compete for a $5,000 prize purse and points toward securing a spot at the longboarding World Title event.
The ROXY Waikiki Classic is the only qualifying event for in the U.S. for the World Championship event in Hainan, China in October 2013.
The surf festival will include vendors such as Paul Mitchell, offering free hair styling stations on the beach with their new Limited Edition SUN line available at paulmitchell.com, and Jamba Juice. On Sunday, local artist Mel Pu’u will perform live from the Awards Stage at 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM.
The ROXY Initiative and Kokua Hawaii Foundation will be joining forces to set up designated recycling bins throughout the event site and running a free water refill station for anyone bringing their own water bottle to the beach.
For those that left their water bottles at home, an official ROXY INITIATIVE water bottle is available at the event for a $5 donation to the Quiksilver Foundation. All donations will be given to the Kokua Hawaii Foundation to support their Plastics Free Schools program.
