Press Release:
IntelliSkin’s Dr. Tim Brown to Lead Interdisciplinary Sports Medicine Team
at 2012 NIKE U.S. Open of Surfing
Brown will coordinate and manage some of the best in sports medicine to treat more than 500 professional surfers and skaters at this year’s event in Huntington Beach, July 28-August 5
Huntington Beach, CA (July 19, 2012) – Dr. Tim Brown and the team behind IntelliSkin will return to the sand of Huntington Beach, Calif. this summer, leading an extensive medical team at the NIKE U.S. Open of Surfing, from July 28-August 5.
With his office temporarily relocated to the beach, Dr. Brown, who serves as Co-Medical Director for the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP), will oversee the IntelliSkin Interdisciplinary Sports Medicine Team as they treat and care for hundreds of professional athletes competing at the nine-day event.
The IntelliSkin Medical Team will consist of chiropractors, orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, massage therapists, strength and conditioning coaches and acupuncturists, addressing any number of athlete requests, from injuries to conditioning exercises.
“This is quite possibly the largest collection of athletes to be cared for by one Interdisciplinary Sports Med team, and when you’re preparing a staff who will be treating elite athletes, you have no choice but to use the A-Team,” said Dr. Brown, who has been assembling interdisciplinary sports medicine teams since 1985, when he was the first official Medical Director for the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP).
“It’s not uncommon for an injured athlete to have three or more specialists collaborating and working simultaneously with them to diagnose, treat, educate them on best methods to expedite recovery, and get back to competition.”
Known by his peers as The “Beach Doc” for his career as a beach volleyball player and extensive work with surfers and volleyball players, Dr. Brown would often treat other players when he was in between games, and was eventually asked to head up the first official sports medicine team for the Tour.
In subsequent years, he fostered relationships with a number of athletes, including Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning, Jordy Smith, Coco Ho and other top surfers, who regularly visit for treatment while in Southern California.
“Athletes treating athletes was a concept born out of necessity,” adds Dr. Brown. “The idea was to put the athlete first and provide them with all the resources they needed to compete and recover at the highest level – this is what I would have wanted as an often-injured athlete. The model brings together like-minded sports healthcare professionals with a functional approach to treatment, diverse backgrounds and experience treating athletes in the same place, as a team.”
Dr. Brown’s Interdisciplinary staff members have shared their professional insights, which allow them to understand and relate to the needs of all U.S Open athletes. As professional athletes themselves, the Medical Team can also better relate when communicating with the injured athletes.
“We’ve seen surfing events grow dramatically over the years, and are increasingly impressed with the progression of training and on-site medical care for our athletes,” said Bob Hurley, CEO of Hurley. “Having access to numerous health professionals under Dr. Brown’s supervision helps to further elevate this event and allows the athletes to perform at the highest levels possible.”
Dr. Brown’s extensive work with professional athletes over the last 25 years inspired him to launch IntelliSkin, a performance-enhancing line of apparel worn by many of today’s best athletes, from surfers to Major League Baseball players and Olympians. IntelliSkin helps cue the body to create better posture and alignment, thereby improving performance, reducing the risk of injury and aiding with recovery from training and travel.
The birth of IntelliSkin was actually derived from surfing and Dr. Brown’s work with some of the top riders on tour. Many were using the high-tech functional Kinesio sports taping method developed by Dr. Brown, but were tired of getting taped every day. They eventually requested a garment they could wear, which mimicked the benefits and support. Soon afterwards, Dr. Brown created a prototype from his hotel room on the road, and IntelliSkin was born.
“Because of the nature and demands of the sport, surfers develop very tight muscles and muscular imbalances around the neck, shoulders and back,” Brown adds.
“Intelliskin is an extension of the taping system, a posture workout you can wear that simply cues the body to work more efficiently. Athletes love the fact that now they can just put on IntelliSkin and instantly benefit from being in better posture and alignment.”
During the U.S. Open this month, Dr. Brown and his team will be located behind the athlete tent, providing competitors with easy access to medical treatment. Athletes will be given the opportunity to try new IntelliSkin products, including the Zipper Collection, which features a top-to-bottom zipper, cool jade for temperature reduction and 50+ UPF sun protection. IntelliSkin’s presence during the week will also include commercials shown on large screens around the event and Dr. Brown featured as a guest during the Webcast.
