EVENTS & EXHIBITS HIGHLIGHT OCTOBER SURFBOARD SHOW
Something for everyone at THE BOARDROOM; Early Bird exhibit pricing now
DEL MAR, CA. – July 18, 2012 — A list of surfboard centric events & exhibits highlight THE BOARDROOM International Surfboard Show taking place October 6 & 7, 2012 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.
The cultural hive and surfboard revival that is THE BOARDROOM includes a tribute to legend Mark Richards, the worlds top surfboard manufacturers, live shaping, QnA with top surfboard designers, a film festival, performance surf art, a live auction, a surfboard demo morning, a paddle race, longboard skate demos, eco-resin swirl laminating, autograph signings, book signings, live music, surfboard giveaways, surfboard appraisals, a vintage surfboard meet and great deals on new boards, fins and gear. All of this and much, much more make THE BOARDROOM at the Del Mar Fairgrounds the place to be for surfboard lovers October 6th and 7th.
ICONS OF FOAM:
The weekend centers around a celebration of shaper, legend, pioneer, ambassador and 4X ASP World Champion: Mr. Mark Richards. US Blanks presents the Icons of Foam shaping tribute honoring Mark Richards. Shapers competing in the tribute to MR include past tribute champions Pat Rawson, Wayne Rich, Ricky Carroll, plus MR Mentor Reno Abellira, Hawaii’s John Pyzel and 15 year old Canary Island shaper Taz. These six shapers will be replicating a classic MR twin fin with the winner receiving $1K and his name inscribed on the Mike Marshall Icons of Foam Tribute to the Masters perpetual trophy.
BEST OF SHOW:
The public will help vote on the Best of Show surfboard in a unique walk through exhibit displaying all of the Best of Show surfboards. Each surfboard manufacturer is asked to pick a category, build one incredible board, and enter it in one of The BOARDROOM Best of Show categories. The winning manufacturer receives a full page ad in SURFER Magazine. Categories are: 1) Best Sustainable Surfboard 2) Best Longboard 3) Best Wooden Surfboard 4) Best Shortboard 5) Best Concept Surfboard
QnA SHAPING BAY:
A selection of shapers discuss with the crowd design thoughts and theory and answer questions while they finish shape one of their models. There will be a moderator moving the discussion along, and the finished blanks given to worthy surfers in the crowd. Best question wins? Meet the shapers, discuss design directly with the craftsman. Scheduled: Matt Biolos, Matt Calvani, Pat Rawson, Daniel Thomson, and Tim Stamps (others tbd).
SURFAID BOARD ART BENEFIT AUCTION:
Gorgeous and unique surfboards shaped by legends and beautified by artists of the highest caliber. One-of-a-kind surfboards will be on auction to benefit the SurfAid mission in Indonesia and elsewhere. This is your chance to bid and own incredible surfboards, with intense artwork and all for a good cause (and a partial tax write-off!).
SURFBOARD DEMOS:
The surfers chance to try out some of the exhibitor boards, fins, wetsuits and gear. The demo morning is Sunday October 7th from 7am-10am @ 15th Street Powerhouse Park in Del Mar. A combination of reef and beach break peaks are available at 15th Street. Roll up early and try out all the boards, winter 2013 wetsuits, fins and other gear!
DEL MAR CUP PADDLE RACE:
From 15th street buoy to DM Rivermouth and back. Human powered craft only.
CINEMA GROTTO SHORT FILM FEST:
Pierce Michael Kavanagh of San Diego Surf Film Festival fame is curating a selection of thoughtful, evocative, and unique short films from independent filmmakers. Stimulating. Quick. Powerful. Also on the schedule is Markus Davids’ award winning documentary BOARDROOM Legends of Surfboard Shaping.
ART I ZEN:
Four established surfing artists (Wade Koniakowsky, Matt Beard, Colleen Gnos & Damian Fulton) will paint a unique image on a large canvas while live music is performed on-site. The finished piece goes to The Sport of Kings Foundation a 501c non-profit which was established to provide assistance to the lives of people in the Surfboard Manufacturing industry within California by continuously evolving to meet their health and human services needs. In addition to the live art there will be many prominent surfer/artists displaying their works.
GUN CLUB LOUNGE:
Couches and surfboards mix in this chillax zone in the middle of the show floor. Kick back and take in the clean lines of some legendary big wave surfboards from past and present. Premium and exclusive THE BOARDROOM tee’s available with a portion of the proceeds going to the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy. Gun Club Lounge is presented by The Soul Project
AUTOGRAPH & BOOK SIGNINGS:
Shane Dorian (Billabong), Greg Long (Xcel), Christian Beamish (Patagonia) and others are on hand for you to meet and sign autographs; a complete list can be found on the website closer to the show dates.
SURFING HERITAGE FOUNDATION:
The SHF is one of our beneficiaries and they will be presenting a special booth which focuses on the twin fin and its historical significance before, during and after MR! Also, hand painting of hand-planes.
ECO-LAMINATING:
This highly engaging demo incorporates resin swirls and finely trimmed laps
using state-of-the-art eco-friendly resins.
LONGBOARD SKATE ZONE:
Leading skateboard brands will be on hand to demo the skates for the surf/skate minded individual. A large outside demo area will be available. Grom heaven.
VINTAGE SURFBOARD SHOWDOWN:
The Longboard Collectors Club is bringing ten of their top collectors on Sunday to show off their prime LBCC wares and talk vintage surfboards. Appraisals for the vintage surfboards and memorabilia will be available on SUNDAY only. Bring your prized goods for appraisals – again-appraisals are Sunday only!
MUSICAL SURFERS:
Live music stage outside will offer entertainment and a place to rest your feet. Grab a bite and enjoy the sounds of surfers playing music for surfers.
LIVE WEBCAST:
We’ll be featuring THE BOARDROOM exhibitors in short engaging interviews, along with all of the planned events and exhibits in a live webcast both Saturday and Sunday.
