BILLABONG HOSTS 13TH ANNUAL

COSMIC CREEK PRESENTED BY SUBARU AT SALT CREEK SEPTEMBER 8 & 9

IRVINE, CA – (September 5, 2012) – This weekend the sands of Salt Creek Beach Park in Dana Point will become a walk down memory lane as Billabong hosts the 13th Annual Cosmic Creek Surf Contest presented by Subaru.

Celebrating the unique surf style of the 1970s and 80s, the acclaimed counterculture surf festival runs all day on September 8th and 9th, garnished by a FREE Sunday afternoon Donavon Frankenreiter concert on the lawn above the beach.

Surfers of all ages will compete on randomly-assigned surfboards built 30 or more years ago featuring retro designs such as twin fins, stingers and pintails. Leading the charge in the display of “back-in-the-day” fun are the divisions for Pros and Legends which have recently featured names like Rob Machado, Timmy Curran, Chris Ward, Dave Rastovich, Tom Curren and Kelly Slater.

This year entries have been received from top surfers including Tom Curren, Nathan Fletcher, Christian Fletcher, Pat O’Connell, Alex Knost, Tyler Warren, Creed McTaggert, Tanner Rozunko, Wade Goodall and Courtney Conologue. The Pros will vie for the $1,000 winner-takes-all prize.

The Cosmic scene brings back the alternative and inventive vibe that went along with the surfboards and styles of the 1970’s & 80’s – before the three-fin thruster design became the global standard. It’s a two-day voyage back to an era where single-fins and twinnies ruled the world and strangely short surf trunks were the ultimate in coastal coolness.

A full slate of activities will add to the groovy festival vibe. Art projects will be taking shape around the contest site and there will be regular giveaways of event posters and some killer swag from many Cosmic Creek sponsors. Delicious food items will be provided by Daphne’s and Chipotle and shave ice will be available on Sunday thanks to Nalu’s Grill.

The contest is open to the public and runs 8 AM-2PM Saturday, September 8th and Sunday, September 9th. To enter the event, download an entry form at www.Billabong.com/cosmiccreek, and turn in signed entry forms with payment to Hobie Dana Point or Killer Dana surf shops. For entry questions call (949) 489-8380.

Immediately following the Cosmic Creek awards ceremony, legendary Salt Creek surfer/musician Donavon Frankenreiter will host a FREE concert on the lawn, adjacent to the contest. Set in the natural amphitheater that is Salt Creek Park and running from 4PM to dusk, the setting encourages attendees to bring blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy Donavon’s soulful tunes while the sun sets over the ocean.

Subaru, the presenting sponsor of Cosmic Creek 2012, will be highlighting the festivities with the donation of a check for $5,000 to the Orange County Parks system as a show of thanks for once again welcoming the event back to the beautiful shores of Salt Creek Park.
