Important industry retailer Zumiez reported this morning that same store sales, a key metric of a retailer’s performance, rose 5.6% in the important back-to-school month of September.

In August, also a popular time for school shopping, comps rose 3.7%.

Strong categories in September included footwear, men’s, junior’s and hardgoods.

Weak categories were accessories and boys.

The dollars per transactions increased, while the number of transactions decreased.

Year to date, Zumiez comps are up 8.8%. The company has forecast a 3% to 5% comp increase for Q3.

The company ended the period with 489 stores, and 433 of those were included in the comp store calculations.
