Press release:
(Carlsbad, CA)– July 1st, 2013 –Reef, the premium surf travel brand, is pleased to announce its sponsorship of the Reef Pro El Salvador, the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-star qualifying event at the famed point break of Punta Roca in El Salvador. Surfers from around the world will descend on La Libertad for a piece of the $155,000 purse July 9-14, 2013. View the live webcast on www.reef.com.
La Libertad is a storied right-hand cobblestone point break that has the ability to get perfect during the Northern Hemisphere summer. First discovered in the 1970s on Surfer Magazine safaris, this historic wave has the potential to barrel with high performance sections ideal for progressive surfing. El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America with epic setups all over its Pacific Coast.
Reef will have two exciting wildcards in the event, starting with Taylor Knox, aka
“Captain America,” who surfed the ASP’s World Championship Tour (WCT) for 20 years, tied only to 11-time world champ and friend, Kelly Slater. Regarded by the surfing community as one of the most powerful surfers of all time and renowned for his patented front side carve, Knox is well suited for this venue with grace, power and flow.
“I’m so pumped to surf such a good right point, if this wave is on, it’s world class,” says Knox.
The second sponsor wildcard is a wild in every sense of the word; Reef’s premiere Global free surfing talent, Nick Rozsa, hailing from Ventura, California. Known for his progressive surfing in online video clips and the recently released Reef collaboration with What Youth “Anything Sing,” Rozsa brings the element of futuristic surprise to his heats.
“I’m excited to be chosen as a wildcard for the Reef Pro El Salvador,” explains Rozsa, “I’m really looking forward to surfing a world-class point break and seeing how far I can get.”
Reef is proud to have an army of its Ambassadors competing in this event, including California’s Conner Coffin, Luke Davis, and Dylan Goodale, as well as Brian Toth of Puerto Rico, Billy Kemper of Hawaii, Michael Powell of North Carolina, and Australia’s Cooper Chapman. They will do battle with such notable World Tour competitors as Josh Kerr, Miguel Pupo, Alejo Muniz, Damien Hobgood, Brett Simpson, Fred Patacchia, Pat Gudauskas, William Cardoso and Yadin Nicol.
Reef’s investment in El Salvador is a natural connection for the brand with its deep-rooted history in Latin America. It’s also an exciting time to travel, as Reef recently launched it’s Shelter Supply collection of surfable walkshorts, water resistant packs, duffel bag, waterproof rainshell, boardies, travel organizers and wallet this year.
The ASP held a 3-star qualifying event at La Libertad in 2012, won by Hawaiian Hank Gaskell. It has also been home to International Surfing Association events in recent years.
