Important industry account Sun Diego announced last week it will be moving its store at the Carlsbad Premium Outlets Center to a new location in the city.
We followed up with Sun Diego owner Dave Nash to find out more about the change and about the new location, including some interesting plans for the space.
Sun Diego currently operates nine locations in the greater San Diego area.
How long were you at the Carlsbad Premium Outlet Center?Â
Dave Nash: It will be 10 years next March.
How did that store perform for you?
Dave: It was a great store for us!
Why did they not renew your lease?
Dave: Let’s see, here are some reasons: we weren’t really an outlet store; we only had one store in their 300 centers; and they gave our space to a national tenant who did a multiple store deal.
What appealed to you about the historic Twin Inn building in Carlsbad?
Dave: I think you have to see it to really understand. It’s such a cool building and so rich in history.
I thought it would make a perfect boardshop, and the location couldn’t be better. It’s right on the corner of Carlsbad Blvd (PCH) and Carlsbad Village Drive, right at the hub of Carlsbad Village, which is a great shopping, restaurant/bar and cultural area for the City of Carlsbad.
How does the location compare to the Outlet Center?
Dave: It will never match the traffic at the Outlet Center and we may never see the same revenues from the new location but it can’t always be about the money.
This will be more about being a great, fun and very special project!
Sharing the space with a restaurant sounds interesting. Can you tell me more about that and the thinking behind it?Â
Dave: Unfortunately I can’t at this time, as the deal has not been 100% finalized. I hope to have that done this week and should be able to share more then. I can tell you that it will be very special!
How big will the new store be?Â
Dave: The space is 11,043 feet and the restaurant will take up approximately 3,500 square feet. We actually won’t know exactly until the floor plan is created for both spaces later this week.
How is business these days?
Dave: Never ask a retailer how business is in October, January and February.
Any news about San Clemente?Â
Dave: Wow, good old San Clemente – the lease we signed back in 2006 for The Shops at San Clemente.
The latest word on that project is we will get our space approximately late spring to early summer of 2015 for an opening of sometime in the fall of 2015.
If they are late again we could possibly be having our Grand Opening and 10-year anniversary at the same time!
