Press release:
(Carlsbad, CA)-February 27, 2014 – The excitement is palpable at Reef headquarters as three-time Association of Surfing Professionals World Champ, Mick Fanning, signs on to continue his 16-year relationship with the global surf lifestyle leader through 2016.
“Re-signing with Reef is a great thing for me personally, says Fanning, who captured his third title in December at the Pipeline Masters. “I have been a part of the family for over 16 years. Reef has always been a great support over the years and has helped me achieve my dreams. I look forward to new and exciting adventures with Reef.”
Fanning, 32, of Coolangatta, Australia, won his first World Title in 2007, followed by a second in 2009. With 16 ASP World Tour event wins under his belt, his pure love for surfing and competition has brought a new professionalism perspective to the sport.
In 2004, Reef launched the ultra comfortable “Fanning,” Mick’s signature performance-oriented sandal with a beverage opener in the sole that changed the casual footwear game forever. It remains one of the best selling sandals of all time.
“Reef is thrilled to continue such long lasting relationship with Mick. His competitive milestones speak for themselves but the passion and desire to excel in all aspects of Mick’s life is so parallel to Reef products and the culture of our brand,” says Global Reef Ambassador Manager Shea Perkins.
Fanning’s history speaks for itself. As a wildcard, he won the Rip Curl Pro Bells in 2001 and qualified for the ASP World Tour the following year. Beginning with a win at the Quiksilver Gold Coast Pro to start the season in 2007, he went on to bag the Quiksilver Pro France, and earned his first ASP World Tour title. He went on a late season tear in 2009, winning three of the last four events to reclaim his ASP crown on a memorable Pipe day.
The 2013 ASP World Tour was historic in every way. Fanning came out of the gate with semifinal finishes at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast and Billabong Pro Rio. After meeting Slater in the finals of the Volcom Fiji Pro, he added another semi final finish at the Billabong Pro Teahupoo. Fanning edged to within spitting distance of the crown with a win at the Quiksilver Pro France in October and beat out Kelly Slater for his third title in epic conditions at Pipe.
Fanning now joins a group of World Champion elite that includes Tom Curren and Andy Irons with three ASP titles each. It also makes Fanning the surfer with the best record in the era of 42-year-old Kelly Slater.
