Trends to watch at SIMA Image Awards tonight

There are several brand streaks at stake and interesting new entrants to watch at the SIMA Image Awards tonight.
Published: February 12, 2014

The SIMA Image Awards are being held tonight at The Grove in Anaheim, and there are several interesting trends to watch.

The brands nominated for the most awards include:

Billabong for seven – Men’s Apparel, Men’s Boardshort, Men’s Marketing Campaign, Women’s Apparel, Women’s Marketing, Women’s Swim, Environmental Product

Rip Curl for five – Men’s Boardshort, Women’s Marketing Campaign, Women’s Swim, Accessory Product, Wetsuit

Hurley for five – Men’s Apparel, Men’s Boardshort, Men’s Marketing, Environmental Product, Footwear Product.

There are a few brands that have dominated their categories in the past several years, and it will be interesting to see if their streak continues.

Women’s Swim: Since the swim award was introduced in 2007, there has only been one winner – L*Space, which has won six years in a row.

Men’s Boardshorts: The industry takes a lot of pride in its boardshorts, and Hurley has come out on top on this much-watched category for five years running. Will Hurley be able to make it six?

Surfboard of the Year: Channel Islands has dominated, winning the award for five years in a row.

Men’s Apparel: RVCA has been in front for three years running.

Women’s Apparel: Before Quiksilver Girls unseated them last year, Billabong Girls had won for Women’s Apparel four years straight – 2008 through 2011. Now that Quiksilver Girls is defunct, will Billabong regain its title?

Newcomer alert

Patagonia is relatively new on the surf scene and but is making it mark at the SIMA Image Awards this year.

The brand is up for three awards – Environmental Product, Hardgoods Accessory, and Wetsuit.

That’s a lot of nominations for a new entrant, given that established brands such as Volcom, RVCA, Vans and Roxy are also up for three awards.

Quiksilver, the largest industry brand by revenue, is not nominated in any category this year.
