The first place people think of when they hear “surfing” is Hawaii, not Texas. The Texas Surf Museum has decided to show our visitors Hawaii through the eyes of Texans. Our new exhibit, “Lenses of Aloha”, will feature photography and artwork from native Texans “G Scott” Ellwood and Jon Steele. This collaborative exhibit will awe visitors with the creativity and vision of the artists, as well display the beauty and power of nature in Hawaii and the grace and talent of the world’s top surfers.
Each December for the last seven years, ‘G Scott’ Ellwood has visited the North Shore of Oahu for the express purpose of capturing the world’s best surfers on some of the planet’s most premium waves. His two-to-three week excursions are planned to coincide with the running of the surfing world’s most prestigious contest, the Pipeline Masters portion of the famed Hawaiian Triple Crown Series. Ellwood has returned to Texas each year with thousands of photos that nobody has ever seen; many of them unseen by his own eyes. When asked about the upcoming exhibit G Scott stated, “It is a great pleasure to be able to share these photos with the public here in Texas.” Ellwood has selected a wonderful series of photos for this exhibit, each unique photo offers a glimpse into a world of the world’s best surfing locations, famous surfers, and the ‘Aloha Spirit’ that is prevalent during the circus atmosphere that exists on the North Shore during this time each year.
A prominent name in action sports photography, Jon Steele built his career by combining passion, inspiration and creativity. While his photo career truly began 15 years ago, Steele’s creative side began in fine art. Steele has now brought his talents full circle by creatively incorporating these artistic techniques such as sculpting, painting, and writing together along with his camera to create unique visual experiences. Giving back to his home state of Texas is part of moving forward for Steele. Steele has been a friend and supporter of the Museum since it opened in 2005. With regular visits to Hawaii over the last 20 years documenting the world’s best surfers and skaters as his profession, Steele is excited to share his vision of the islands from his most recent visit with the Texas Surf Museum.
The opening reception will be held Friday, June 6, 2014 from 6-9 p.m. to kick off Water Street Markets’ annual Summerfest weekend celebrations. Hors d’œuvres will be served and there will be a cash bar. Tickets are $5 at the door. Please call 361-882-2364 with any questions.
