Press release:
New York, New York – March 31, 2014 – Girls Riders Organization (GRO) set a new world record for the most females skateboarding together in a single session with 153 females skating at the New York, NY GRO Crew and House of Vans All Chicks Skate Jam on March 15th.
“That was very inspiring to see that many girls skating in one spot in New York. I remember when I started skating in the 80’s there was only 3 girls in the whole 5boros.” – Alex Corporan, NYC skateboarding veteran.
Girls of all ages, abilities, backgrounds and experience came together at House of Vans (HOV) in Brooklyn, New York. Girls traveled from coast to coast and as far as Canada.
Some came to learn to skateboard at the workshops, some came to compete in the contests and some just came to skate and meet other girls. Every girl skating there was a representation of the growth of girls in skateboarding.
More females are turning to skateboarding for both physical fitness and fun now than ever before. Action sports are providing a great alternative to traditional sports and exercise, helping more females get and remain active longer in life.
With girls skating at the GRO x HOV All Chicks Skate Jam ranging from 4 to almost 50 years old it shows how skateboarding is not limited by neither age nor gender. Anyone can skate.
“Over the past 9 years working with GRO, I have been able to personally witness to the ongoing growth of female participation in action sports. The record turnout of this is clear proof for everyone to see.” – Courtney Payne-Taylor, Founder, GRO
Anyone who still doubts the growth of girls skateboarding, needs to take a moment, look around and reconsider. It’s only going to get bigger!
Thank you to all the volunteers, parents, media and sponsors that helped make this event possible. Thanks to Vans, House of Vans, Stance Socks, The Blonde Locks, Bones Wheels, Vision Street Wear, Rockstar Bearings and sPACYcLOUd for the supporting donations.
About GRO
Girls Riders Organization, Inc. (GRO) is a 501c3 organization founded to inspire, educate and support girls of all ages through skateboarding, snowboarding and other action. In 2014, the addition of GRO Riders and GRO Crews working as leaders on the community level brought increased accessibility, ongoing inspiration and support to cities in almost half the states across the country. GRO is a locally focus, nationally connected network telling girls they are important, they are capable and they matter in order to create a more positive and open environment for females that extends beyond just action sports.
