Industry customer The Buckle recorded a small gain in total sales and flat net income in the third quarter ended Nov. 1.

Men’s sales were the strongest, rising 8%. Women’s sales declined 1.5%.

The Buckle is best known for its wide denim selection, and denim accounted for 46.5% of total sales last year in men’s and women’s combined.

However, the fashion cycle has moved away from denim, which can be tough for a retailer like The Buckle.

CEO Dennis Nelson acknowledged that denim sales have slowed, but said the category still remains a robust business for the retailer. The Buckle is also working on new fits and finishes that it is excited about.

Q3 Financial results

Net sales: up 1.9% to $292.2 million

Comp store sales: down 0.3%

Online sales: up 3.8% to $22.8 million

Net income: Flat at $40.6 million

The Buckle operates 461 stores
