Zumiez will overtake PacSun this year as the largest industry retailer.

As of Feb. 28, Zumiez operated a total of 604 stores, including 550 in the U.S., 35 in Canada and 19 in Europe.

As of March 25, PacSun operated 605 stores, all in the U.S.

The two retailers are on different points of their lifecycles.

Zumiez plans to open 57 stores in 2015 – 44 in the U.S., seven stores in Canada and six in Europe. That will bring the company’s total store count to 661 globally.

Zumiez long-term goal is to open 600 to 700 stores in the U.S. It envisions opening 60 to 70 in Canada over time, and sees a big opportunity in Europe to create a pan-European business with Blue Tomato.

PacSun has been closing stores over the past several years. Four years ago, PacSun operated 852 stores.

In 2015, while PacSun may open a few stores in certain circumstances, the focus will be to prune out unproductive locations as leases expire and improve performance at its remaining stores. The company said yesterday it could close as many as 10 to 20 stores this year.

PacSun still outpaces Zumiez in revenue. PacSun’s 2014 revenue totaled $826.8 million. Zumiez 2014 revenue was $811.6 million.

Zumiez, however, is very profitable, with net income of $43.2 million in 2014. PacSun has not turned a profit in about seven years.
