San Clemente, CA — Surfing Heritage & Culture Center (SHACC) invites the surfing and art communities to come together to experience the new exhibit, “This is Not Surf Art,” opening Saturday, June 27, with an artist reception from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. Admission is free for SHACC members and $5 for non-members.
This show will feature an amazing and diverse collection of work in a variety of media from accomplished artists, including Kevin Ancell, Wolfgang Bloch, Casper Brindle, Ben Brough, Gomez Bueno, Alex Couwenberg, Jim Evans, Ned Evans, David Lloyd, Melinda Morey, Andy Moses, Mele Saili, Kate Sikorsky, C.R. Stecyk, and Alex Weinstein.
“Palm trees are not included, so don’t expect to see stereotypical surf art,” said Barry Haun, Creative Director/Curator at SHACC. “In addition to being great artists, many of the participants in the show are also excellent surfers, and they’re stoked to display their works alongside the world’s largest collection of historically significant surfboards and surf culture artifacts.”
According to SHACC’s Executive Director, Paul Strauch, the new exhibit is going to be a departure from recent shows at the 8,000 square foot museum. “This is going to be our first show in quite some time in which surfing and surfboards are not the focal points,” Strauch said. “It’s going to be very interesting and engaging for our visitors to immerse themselves in fine art.”
The opening event will also feature live slack key guitar music performed by Richard Knight, appetizers by Daphne’s California Greek restaurants, plus a no host bar serving wines from Longboard Vineyards, beers from San Clemente based Left Coast Brewing Co., and water from Hawaiian Springs.
