NEWPORT, RI – On Saturday July, 11th 2015 1-8PM, Chairman and Host Sid Abbruzzi presents Water Brothers Surf Fest V. Water Brothers’ fifth annual event returns to historic Fort Adams, the recent host to the only US stop in Volvo Ocean Race 2015’s yacht race around the world. Water Brothers Surf Fest V welcomes legendary surf and skate trailblazers Christian Fletcher, Jason “Ratboy” Collins, Jason Jesse, Kalani Robb, Greg Loehr and Peter “PT” Townend as Honored Guests. The show also expands its exhibits to include over 800 vintage surfboards, and two skateboard attractions.
This year, a 500+ Skateboard and Memorabilia Exhibit will accompany the 800+ Vintage Surfboard Exhibit. Keith Kyle, Steve Morrissey and the “Longboard Brothers” of Matunuck, Rhode Island will contribute over 300+ vintage surfboards. Two skateboard attractions include a 30ft WB Skateboard Ramp (wood donated by Kirby/ Perkins Construction), and a 13ft Skateboarding Full Pipe provided by Robert Kendall of Weird Wood Skateboards. Both the “Ramp” and “Full Pipe”, will be assembled onsite the six acres of field inside the Fort for professional and amateur skateboard demonstrations. The event highlights a variety of 30+ local and notable surf/skate vendors: Converse, RVCA, Santa Cruz, Catch, Salty Crew, Volcom, Element, Wounded Knee, All I need, and Roll for Rob, as well as surfboard shapers: WRV, Grain, Mystic, Spirare, Tora, Levy and Roberts Surfboards and more.
Local Food Vendors include Tallulah’s Tacos, Mission, Boru Noodle Bar, Empire Tea and Coffee, The Wharf Pub Newport and Hawaiian Jim’s Shave Ice, as well as two Beer Gardens provided by Fort Adams Trust and Newport Storm. The third annual WB Charity Raffle sponsored by Keith Kyle and Steve Morrissey of Houlihan, Managhan, Morrissey & Kyle, “Newport’s Law Firm” will be held midday. The raffle will benefit two non-profit organizations, Stronghold Society and Clean Ocean Access. Stronghold Society “Live life Call to Action Campaigns” encourages Native and non- Native youth through leadership development, arts programs and skateboarding. COA is an environmental group based in Newport, RI working towards “Action today so future generations can enjoy ocean activities”. Water Brothers will also be partnering with COA to initiate an Environmentally Sustainable Event, organizing a “green protocol” in order to minimize waste.
Water Brothers Surf Fest V honors the memory of the late Joe McGovern and Mike Tabeling, both cherished friends of Abbruzzi and Water Brothers. Joe McGovern of Narragansett, RI was a Professional Surf Photographer responsible for much of the Northeast surf coverage seen through the last 40 years. He was also the Director of PR for WB Surf Fest IV. Mike Tabling, a Cocoa Beach native was a US surfing champion, East Coast’s first international-caliber surfer, a pioneer at Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa and Honored Guest at WB Surf Fest IV.
Water Brothers is a surf and skate company located in Newport, RI, established in 1971 by Sid Abbruzzi. “Water Brothers Surf Fest” was founded by Abbruzzi in 2010 as an outreach event bringing local and global surf and skate community together in order to maintain its culture and preserve its history through visual exhibitions.
