Cherokee hints at big plans for Flip Flop Shops

"Big retail" could be in Flip Flop Shops' future, according to Cherokee executives

Cherokee executives hinted at some big plans for Flip Flop Shops during a recent earnings conference call.

Cherokee acquired the industry footwear customer in October.

Executives said Flip Flop Shops is in advanced discussions with “big retail” in the U.S., Canada, India, Mexico and Western Europe to add Flip Flop Shops shop-in-shops to their stores.

They gave the example of what Luxottica has done by adding Sunglass Hut shop-in-shops at Macy’s or Sephora inside JC Penney locations.

Cherokee executives said a deal could be announced early in the new year, with some shop-in-shops opening in the first quarter.

Cherokee executives also said they plan to add Cherokee-owned brands to the Flip Flop Shops merchandise mix, including Everyday California, Tony Hawk, Sideout and Cherokee.

Flip Flop Shops has recently entered the athletic arena as well, and now carries Under Armour and Puma sandals.

Tony Hawk

Cherokee also owns the Tony Hawk brand, which it bought from Quiksilver.

The company is gearing up for the launch of the brand at Walmart Canada next year.

The deal covers young men, big boys and little boys for apparel, footwear and accessories, with more categories expected to come online.

The line will launch for Fall ’16.

A big marketing campaign is planned, and Tony Hawk is going to Canada to help the launch.
