Walmart announced this week that it is entering the outdoor space by acquiring online outdoor retailer Moosejaw for $51 million.
Michigan-based Moosejaw carries a wide range of outdoor brands such as Patagonia, The North Face, Arc’teryx and Marmot in addition to industry brands like Burton, Roxy and Olukai.
Moosejaw also operates 10 stores in Michigan, Missouri, Colorado and Illinois.
Walmart will add Moosejaw to its e-commerce operation, which will help the retailer gain more online expertise, while also moving into the active outdoor space.
In addition to Walmart.com, Walmart owns Jet.com, a smaller version of Amazon.
“Moosejaw has a large assortment of specialty apparel and accessories, strong industry relationships, and rich product content,” Walmart said in a statement. “Their expertise will help us further enhance our customer experience.”
Walmart believes Moosejaw suppliers who want to reach new consumers could also benefit.
“Moosejaw suppliers that are interested in expanding their consumer reach will now have the opportunity to serve more customers through Jet.com and our other e-commerce sites,” Walmart said.
Moosejaw will remain in Michigan and be run as a stand-alone company.
