Outdoor industry veteran Chris Speyer is joining Vancouver, British Columbia-based Mountain Equipment Company (MEC) as its chief merchandising officer (CMO).
Speyer’s seven-year run at Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI), most recently as its senior vice-president, is ending and he’ll officially join MEC at the end of the month, according to a press release.
Speyer brings with him 30 years of outdoor industry experience, which began in Canada. The Ottawa, Ontario native worked at a local store selling skis, bikes, and footwear, and he has been a member of MEC since the ’90s, when he lived in Calgary.
“Joining MEC feels like coming home,” Speyer said in a statement. “I still remember flipping through the seasonal catalog, inspired by the amazing photos and gear. Beyond the thrill of returning to Canada, I’m drawn to how MEC stays true to its founding values. It’s a beloved brand that prioritizes great people and great products, aligning perfectly with my values and leadership style. I’m beyond excited to be part of the team and help MEC continue to thrive and succeed!”
Speyer spoke at last year’s Sea Otter Classic Summit about how REI was targeting younger, diverse, and less affluent customers. MEC CEO Peter Hlynsky said in a statement that Speyer’s experience and vendor relationships will elevate the company’s teams and support its next phase of growth.
“Chris leads with values and has a genuine passion for the outdoors, in total alignment with MEC’s core principles,” Hlynsky said. “His remarkable track record of working with different brands and growing the private label business will be instrumental in maximizing the potential of MEC’s own label brand and continuing to offer top-tier assortments at the best price to members.”
MEC operates 23 stores across Canada.
Speyer is an avid biker, skier, and trail runner, and he recently completed the Canyons 50k in Auburn, California.
