The industry turned out last week for the annual Zumiez 100k party in Keystone, Colorado, which celebrated 1,200 of the top salespeople at the company for 2019.
Unfortunately, we were not able to attend this year, but the Zumiez team sent us some information and photos from the big celebration.
The event has turned into more than just a party and this year included four discussion panels about topics such as The Future of Skateboarding, Entrepreneurialism, Amplifying Your Voice for the 2020 Election, and Turning Passion into Purpose with Protect our Winters.
All the employees who attended received gift bags filled with goods from brands such as Adidas, Dickies, Stance and Champion. But the person who really cleans up each year is the top salesperson in the company.
In 2019, Aubrey Peterson from the Mall of America store in Minneapolis earned the top spot. Aubrey sold $818,185 worth of goods and the brands rewarded her.
Her prizes included a trip to Miami for the Rolling Loud music festival along with private yacht and helicopter time from Primitive. Danny Duncan of Virginity Rocks gave her a Tesla with bull horns mounted on the hood. Obey gave Aubrey a one-of-a-kind piece of art and donated $2,500 to her home state charity of choice, Feed My Starving Children. Zumiez matched the donation to make it $5,000. Vans is sending her to Hawaii and Paris, and Converse presented her with a jukebox.
The two-day party, which is always visually stunning, is produced totally in-house by the Zumiez home office team. Nearly everyone attends, from the newest intern to CEO Rick Brooks.
The theme this year was The Next Frontier, which included a spaceship illuminated by real fireworks. The headline musical act was Da Baby, and DJ Spider and State Champs opened up. The party also included a carnival with brand activations including a skate ramp by DC Shoes.
While the 100k is a big party, it really highlights two of Zumiez’s core values: competition and recognition.
“Our employees compete against themselves and each other every year to provide the best customer service,” CEO Rick Brooks said. “Recognizing that hard work happens every day, but the 100k is our chance to bring everybody together to say thank you.”
Nearly 300 brands that are sold at Zumiez took part in the event, and skateboarding brands had a particularly big presence at the 100k this year because the category is on fire right now.
