A New Apparel and Gear Recycling Program Launches

The program brings industrial-level recycling to individual consumers.

Rainy Pass Repair, Inc. is proud to announce the launch of the Pass Down Program, a recycling program aimed at giving technical waterproof and synthetic fabrics a second life—keeping them out of landfills and in circulation.

Since the conception of Rainy Pass Repair, Inc. four decades ago, our mission has always been to keep gear in circulation.  We are now able to go one step further with items at their end-of-life through our partnership with Material Return, LLC.

This program brings industrial-level recycling to individual consumers. If you have outdoor gear and apparel that is no longer functional, but still want to make an environmentally conscious choice to keep the item out of the landfill, you now have another option. Items that qualify for recycling include:

  • Waterproof breathable fabrics, including delaminated materials
  • Synthetic fabrics
  • Damaged, torn, or otherwise unrepairable textiles

How It Works

Send your rainwear, skiwear, and old fishing waders to Rainy Pass Repair, Inc. Once received, Rainy Pass Repair, Inc. carefully disassembles each item, sorting materials and removing non-recyclable trimmings and components from the items.  Once trimmed, the fabric is sent to Material Return to be fiberized and repurposed into a new raw material stream to create products such as:

  • Dog bedding (from high-quality synthetic fibers)
  • Automotive insulation (from waterproof fibers)

“We know that many of our customers want to do the right thing when their gear reaches the end of the road,” said Bob Upton, President at Rainy Pass Repair, Inc. “This program empowers people to reduce waste and be part of a larger circular solution, especially for complex materials that have traditionally been challenging to recycle and harmful to the environment. ”
