An essay about a nude surfer amid the packed lineup of Malibu. A meditation on the way surfers love hand jive. A conversation with 1976 world champion Peter Townend. A eulogy for Jan Michael-Vincent, aka Matt Johnson. A tribute to black surfers. An excerpt from William Finnegan’s “Barbarian Days.” A Q&A with high-trim expert Danica Elbertse.

These are but a few of the pieces you’ll find in “Dazzling Blue,” a book of short non-fiction by Jamie Brisick. The series began five years ago to commemorate the relaunch of Birdwell Beach Britches, founded in 1961. “Dazzling Blue” includes 58 selections that get at the whole gamut of the surf experience. By turns rich, engaging, thought-provoking, humorous, and just plain weird, “Dazzling Blue” is the sort of book that can be ingested in a single gulp, or spread out over months and taken in bit by juicy bit.

Birdwell is also pleased to share a recently filmed Facebook Live conversation about the book with Jamie Brisick and Pulitzer-prize winning author William Finnegan.

Jamie Brisick’s books include Becoming Westerly: Surf Champion Peter Drouyn’s Transformation into Westerly WindinaWe Approach  Our Martinis With Such High ExpectationsHave Board, Will Travel: The Definitive History of Surf, Skate, and Snow, and The Eighties at Echo Beach. His writing and photographs have appeared in The New Yorker, The Surfer’s Journal, and The New York Times. In 2008, he was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship.
