Brazillian sustainable shoe brand, Cariuma is pleased to announce The CARIUMA x Gerry Lopez sneaker launching on July 27th. The sneaker will feature the iconic lightning bolt emblem that has become synonymous with “Mr. Pipeline” and an important piece of surf history, on their signature OCA Low. Gerry Lopez is a king within the Sport of Kings. Considered by many to be the most iconic surfer to ever live, Gerry’s poetic tube-riding is the stuff of lore; he’s a master yogi, lifelong meditation practitioner, and a dedicated environmentalist.
As a brand, Cariuma was born on the beaches of Brazil with co-founders David Python and Fernando Porto using their shared heritage growing up in Brazil and a common respect for the ocean as a basis for the sustainable sneaker brand and the brand ethos of creating better for the earth product. Both surfers themselves, they have a real connection to the ocean and a natural mission to keep our world clean.
The Gerry Lopez sneaker is an expression of our shared approach to life on Earth, carved by an unwavering belief in the human imagination and the interconnected nature of all things.
CARIUMA was born from a sense of creative responsibility, knowing that the future of fashion lies in low-impact design, high-quality products, and a sustained commitment to protecting our planet. We are so excited to partner with Gerry, who shares our values and ethos to his very core. Gerry says it best “If you want to have style, do things that are character-building. Sustainability, too, comes from within – that place where character meets instinctive reverence for the natural world, made manifest through everyday, conscious choices.”
More on Cariuma
CARIUMA is a sustainable sneaker company founded by Fernando Porto & David Python, two prominent industry execs who put people at the center of their mission. The two bonded over their shared values of wellness-balanced employment being at the root of sustainable business practices and the passion for boardsports. After defecting from their high-status, corporate footwear roles, they decided that sustainability needed to come second only to the quality of life for every person that works around them. They felt they had a responsibility to take a stance against the wasteful practices inherent in fast fashion and that it was vital to reinvent the sneaker game. Even with all of the progress that had been made in regard to sustainability and comfort, the old-school brands that they’d previously worked for were, alternately, delivering low-quality, low-comfort sneakers that still dominated the market in an unsustainable way. Enter, CARIUMA. CARIUMA delivers future classics crafted for all-day, everyday comfort as well as longevity and an increased lifespan. CARIUMA works exclusively with ethical factories and sources only natural and recycled premium materials. All shipping impact is offset to become carbon neutral and their single-box shipping method is crafted with recycled and 100% recyclable materials. Plus, for every pair of sneakers sold, the brand plants a pair of trees in the Brazilian rainforest to directly aid reforestation and endangered species’ habitats.
