The word EPIC cannot sum up the past four days in the U.S., as the adidas Skateboarding global/U.S. teams kicked off the global premiere schedule of Away Days. On Thursday night, Away Days took over Los Angeles for the global premiere event with 3500+ skateboarders, industry heavyweights, adidas personnel and fans lining up outside of the Orpheum Theater solidifying the hype around the highly anticipated film. Thousands of guests made their way into the venue and poured out into the backlot of the theater, which was transformed into an Away Days ‘Tour de Force’ of recognizable moments and landmarks captured in the film that spanned three years.
The event reached an apex once guests made their way into the theater filled to capacity that exploded with excitement when hip-hop icon and SoCal native Snoop Dogg took the stage to introduce the team of athletes. Snoop Dogg hyped the crowd for over 10 minutes before bringing skate icon Mark Gonzales onto the stage who setup the film with final remarks before the main event approached. Throughout the screening, guests cheered for the complicated tricks and introduction of parts from their favorite skaters. Capping off the evening was a special performance from House of Pain who performed a slew of hits including the Away Days opening track ‘Jump Around’.
Onward to NYC…
The legwork had already been done in Los Angeles with much of the hype from the global premiere event resonating in NYC upon arrival. On Saturday, hundreds of fans lined up hours before doors opened with chants breaking out periodically from eager fans demanding access into the venue. Guests of all ages filled the Playstation Theater in Times Square anticipating the premiere of Away Days on the east coast with many industry heavyweights in attendance with equal anticipation as the youngest skateboarder onsite. NYC based team rider Tyshawn Jones made it a family affair, bringing his entire entourage with his mom in tow to witness the epic skate film.
Identical to LA, fans cheered throughout the screening at the many parts and introductions of team riders –a special explosion ensued for Dennis Busenitz who was revealed as the closing part in the Away Days film.
The Away Days tour continues with A-level premieres in London, Sao Paulo and Tokyo over the next week, and additional b/c-level premieres throughout the globe.
The momentum is real and adidas Skateboarding is leading the charge as the #1 player in skateboarding for 2016.
