August 19, 2015 (Santa Ana, Calif.) – Birdwell Beach Britches is proud to announce the opening of its first ever standalone retail space in Manhattan Beach, California.
In the 54 years since its founding, Birdwell has never had a company owned retail store at the beach. Aside from the factory store in Santa Ana, the new location is the only place Birdwells are available on the 100-mile stretch of California’s coastline between Venice and Laguna Beach.
The shop features a vast selection of Birdwell product – everything from their newly designed men’s and women’s boardshorts to their nylon surf competition jackets and Birdwell surfboard wax can be found inside.
Designed by Birdwell’s creative director Natas Kaupas, legendary skateboarder & surf influencer, the Manhattan Beach store is the embodiment of his vision for the brand. The steel and wooden elements used in the space evoke the strength and utility of Birdwell’s purpose built apparel.
The walls of the 300 square foot space are adorned with modern and vintage photographs of Birdwell’s rich Southern California history and one of the brand’s first-ever pairs of boardshorts. Its displays are powder-coated I-beams and custom built from reclaimed wood and feature a vintage sewing machine that has sewn Birdwells since the mid-1960s.
The interior is also decorated with salvage art by famed Hawaiian bodysurfer Mark Cunningham, a one-of-a-kind Russell Crotty monoprint from a limited series of works ordinarily found in contemporary art museums, and a rare Joel Tudor/Barry McGee surfboard collaboration created for the Thomas Campbell surf film Sprout.
Customers that visit the store will have the opportunity to design their own custom boardshorts to be handmade according to their specifications at Birdwell’s Santa Ana factory.
Birdwell’s selection offers almost every conceivable color and fit, including its new 310, 311, and 312 styles for men, the new 402 boardshort for women, and kids’ styles as well.
Should any particular style or color be unavailable in Manhattan Beach, Birdwell can ship the desired item directly from the factory within 24 hours. The outpost also offers an all black limited-edition board short which is not sold anywhere else. Other special release products for the Manhattan Beach shop will be available on a ongoing basis.
For kids, the Manhattan Beach store offers exclusive, in-store only vintage styles. Other trusted Birdwell products like totes, hats, t-shirts, and towels and other interesting small goods are also for sale.
