There are very few world-class surfers who also design and shape boards, so when the opportunity to work with Rob Machado presented itself, Firewire leaped at the opportunity.
“We’ve followed Rob’s career for many years, and there are only a handful of surfers from any generation whose relevance has stood the test of time to the degree that Rob’s has, a testament to his surfing ability and character”, said Firewire CEO Mark Price, “The opportunity for Firewire to build his personal surfboard designs for surfers around the world is quite candily, an honor”.
Rob added,” I’m so excited to be working with the crew at Firewire. I’ve been designing boards for many years now and it’s going to be really cool to see those designs come to life in the firewire construction. Their focus on producing the most environmentally conscious surfboards is unmatched by anyone in the industry and it makes me feel that much better about the boards we are making.”
The first 2 Rob Machado designs will be available in early 2016, and will be offered in Firewire’s proprietary, eco-friendlyTimberTEK construction. In addition, Rob has collaborated with renown Hawaiian artist Sig Zane and various applications of Sig’s art will also be offered on some of the boards.
Firewire believes that minor refinements to the shape of today’s modern surfboards can only produce incremental performance benefits. Exponential improvements in performance require the ongoing development of new materials, construction methods and radical shape, which, in turn, will fuel new design success.
In addition, with the increased eco-consciousness of today’s consumer, Firewire is constantly refining our raw materials to decrease the environmental impact of our boards. Currently our surfboards emit only 2% of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that conventional polyurethane boards do throughout their lifespan.
