Just in time for spring 2016, OluKai today announces the launch of a progressive capsule collection with contemporary Honolulu-based artists, Matt and Roxy Ortiz. The duo’s exclusive four piece collection features two men’s styles and two women’s styles, all incorporating elements from the couple’s hand-drawn mural, “Lei Day,” which served as the inspiration for the collection. The whimsical shoes are all available for purchase exclusively at select Hawaiian retail stores and on OluKai.com.
OluKai has a long history of working with artists and a deep commitment to supporting the arts in Hawaiian communities and across the country. On the heels of projects with artists like Kamea Hadar, Tati Suarez and Tristan Eaton, a partnership with Wooden Wave to create a custom shoe collection was the natural next step for the brand.
Drawing inspiration from the Hawaiian environment, the exclusive collection incorporates themes grounded in natural elements. The theme of the collection, “Mauka to Makai”, refers to the connection between the mountain regions and the shoreline regions of Hawaii. The topographical map present in the designs is a reference to “mauka” – meaning “mountain”, and is a representation of how the stars were maps for the ancient Hawaiians. The bold ridgelines in each design symbolize strength and delineate the iconic landmark that is the Ko’olau mountain range. Finally, the flowing currents of leaves and lei’s intertwined with waves signify “makai” which means “towards the ocean” in Hawaiian culture. Also present in each design are leis’ – a representation and powerful symbol of Aloha that is often paired with celebration.
The duo’s exclusive four piece collection features two men’s styles – the Hiapo and Makani as well as two women’s styles – the Kailua and Ho’opio. The upper, inland half of the Lei Day mural represents the men’s concept while the lower half of the mural represents the women’s concept. The premium collection ranges from $95-$150.
Matt and Roxy founded Wooden Wave Art, a collaborative art studio that is part of Honolulu-based artist collective Lana Lane Studios. The Hawaiian creative duo has been in operation for eight years and first joined forces with OluKai in 2013 as part of the Pow! Wow! Blank Canvas fundraising gala, painting custom prints on OluKai shoes. Since that time, they have been involved in a variety of collaborative creative endeavors with the brand, culminating in this fresh spring collection.
