Costa Mesa, California –August 20, 2016–Surfrider Foundation Newport Beach presents their second annual “WASTE-LESS” an art show and fundraiser, hosted by Volcom. Our goal is to raise funds and awareness for Surfrider’s Rise Above Plastics Program. Rise Above Plastics aims to help reduce the use of plastics in our communities. Their main focus is to reduce pollution by decreasing single use plastics by advocating for policies such as the ban on single use plastic bags which will be on the ballot as Prop 67 in California at the upcoming elections in November. Worldwide, nearly 2 million single-use plastic bags are used each minute. Plastic bags are usually reported as the second most common type of ocean litter, after cigarette butts.

The last event drew hundreds of people and Volcom and Surfrider Newport Beach are hoping to have the same turn out this year. During the event there will be art for auction and sale, raffle tickets for items donated by copanies sponsoring the event, the local band Playdate will be performing and many other activities for attendees as well as a hosted bar. The group of artists showcasing are local and also from other states and other countries and work in all different areas of art, ranging from nature photography, painting, sculpture and mixed media. There will also be large art installations of plastic bottles created by Jana Cruder and Matthew LaPuenta. The pieces have been displayed around the greater Los Angeles area and are going to be traveling over and displayed in various locations throughout the country. This installation brings the impact of the consumer and their behavior regarding single-use-plastics into clear site. Beckoning the viewer to evaluate their own behavior with plastic consumption. The pieces are 20ft to 30ft replicas of plastic bottles, plastic disposable cups and straws. Proceeds from the raffle and bar will go towards placing more fill stations in the community to decrease plastic water bottle use. Surfrider will be working with No Beach Plastic and the city of Newport Beach on placing more of these stations around the city. Americans drink more bottled water than any other nation. 29 billion bottles per year1.

All sold work will have 50% of its proceeds donated to Rise Above Plastics, with the other 50% of proceeds going to the artist. This event is open to the public and is 21 and older with an open bar and raffle tickets for sale. Join Surfrider Foundation in protecting the coast and Rise Above Plastics!

About Surfrider Foundation & Plastic Ban

Surfrider Foundation’s mission is the protection and enjoyment of oceans, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network. They hope to reduce the impacts of plastics in the marine environment by raising awareness on the dangers of plastic pollution and the importance of recycling all plastics, as well as reducing single-use plastics. With 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic floating in our ocean, plastic marine litter is one of the most pervasive and menacing problems affecting the marine environment. Plastic doesn’t biodegrade. It may photodegrade over time and break into small pieces, but it never goes away. Marine animals eat it and become sick or die. After six years of advocacy to the California state legislature, a bill to ban plastic bags was signed by Governor Jerry Brown in September 2014. Unfortunately, due to the political maneuvering of the big plastics industry, the bill was stalled and will be put on the ballot as a Referendum. The California voting public will now be asked to affirm this bag ban legislation on November 8, 2016. We support a “YES” vote on the CA Bag Ban!
