Date for Annual Go Skateboarding Day Announced

Celebrate skateboarding worldwide on June 21.
Published: June 18, 2020 Press Release

Go Skateboarding Foundation proudly announces the 2020 incarnation of its annual celebration—Go Skateboarding Day—set to take place on Sunday June 21, 2020. Go Skateboarding Foundation and its former trade-focused sister organization, International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC) created a global holiday when every skateboarder in the world can focus 100% on skateboarding. This day brings together the skateboarding community and encourages everyone to drop what they are doing, have fun, and go skateboarding.

“Due to social distancing and continuing CoViD-19 health concerns, this year’s celebration has been lightheartedly dubbed ‘Go Skateboarding Day’ with the emphasis on #skateathome and the skater’s do-it-yourself ethic of building stuff to skate wherever you are,” said GSF Executive Director Mark Waters. “It’s amazing, even with coronavirus and the precautions of social distancing, to see kids planning and creating their own scenes and their own Go Skateboarding Day events. We encourage everyone to skate at home, exercise proper social distancing if you’re out and about, and to film a trick, wherever you are, and post it with #GSDBestTrick. And as always, be respectful, avoid conflicts, and watch out for each other.”

Go Skateboarding Day works to honor and unite participants in the spirit of skateboarding and since its 2003 inception, has prompted cities to build skateparks, promoted local skate shops and DIY skate spots, and raised money for local and global charities. The holiday has taken on a life of its own, growing exponentially each year, and the flyers for 2020 events can be seen online with the hashtag #goskateboardingday. June 21st was selected as the official day because it’s generally the first day of summer and the longest day of the year.

LIMITED EDITION GSD ARTWORK TEES

Since 2008, Go Skateboarding Foundation has worked with artists to create collectible GSD artwork, and with the launch of the new Foundation website, we will be making selected pieces of that art available on T-shirts for the first time. Artists who have created Go Skateboarding Day art in the past have included Ed Templeton, Steve Caballero, Shepard Fairey, Jim Phillips, Natas Kaupas, Grant Brittain, Alphonzo Rawls, Henry Jones and Mark Gonzales. A limited number of the posters from past years are still available as wellwith all proceeds going to support the Go Skateboarding Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. For the past 17 years, millions of skateboarders have participated globally in more than hundreds of events held worldwide. GSD unites the global skateboard family to have fun, raise money and awareness for needy skateparks, promote local skate shops, and raise money for local charities and community needs. Although this year people will be practicing social distancing, there will still be events happening around the globe.  Go Skateboarding Day’s social accounts will post as many flyers as possible. GSF is encouraging people to post a flyer with events you know about and be sure to use the hashtag #goskateboardingday, and that is the best way to find out about events in your area.
