Hailing from Garden City, South Carolina—where Richards’ family owns Village Surf Shoppe—Cam began surfing at a young age and quickly made his way through the east coast competitive ranks. At 21, he was surfing against many of surfing’s top talent both on the Pacific coast and Hawaii, eventually scoring a rare perfect ten score at the famed Pipeline event in 2018, cementing himself as a legitimate force. Today, Richards is regarded by surf media and his peers as one of the most well-rounded surfers in the sport. Most recently, the 29-year-old claimed victory at the Capitulo Perfeito event in February 2025 at Carcavelos Beach, Portugal.
