Surfline announced today the creation of the 4ocean Wave of the Decade Award, an event that will honor the surfer who has ridden the most memorable wave of the past 10 years on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii.
The ride will be chosen from all ten winners of the O’Neill Wave of the Winter contest — nine from previous years along with this year’s eventual winner, who will be selected by an elite group of judges on March 1, 2020. The surfer who ultimately wins the 4ocean Wave of the Decade award will receive $10,000.
“Catching the “wave of the winter” on the North Shore has long been one of the surf world’s most prestigious accolades,” said Ross Garrett, President of Surfline. “No podium. No trophy. Just pure respect and admiration from the entire surf community. This year, with the help of one of our newest partners, 4ocean, we’re excited to honor the winning wave that stands out above all other past Wave of the Winter winners over the last decade.”
This special event will be presented by 4ocean, a global cleanup company that actively removes trash from the oceans and coastlines, along with recovering and recycling ocean plastic, advocating for sustainable innovation and inspiring people around the world to reduce their consumption of single-use plastic.
“The surfing community means everything to Andrew and I and it’s a huge part of why 4ocean was started. We are stoked to partner with Surfline to celebrate the Wave of the Decade and look forward to continuing our mission to help end the ocean plastic crisis,” said 4ocean co-founder Alex Schulze.
The North Shore winter season has gotten off to a powerful start, with a number of solid entries submitted that will likely be contenders at year’s end. Surfline will be posting regular updates on the event leading up to the announcement of the winner, which will be made during a special ceremony on March 7, 2020.
